Jason's report from 2010 Oceanics ChampionshipsOceanics 2010

Hi guys,
Am stuck sitting here in London Heathrow Airport. 12 hrs I must wait for my next flight back to Greece because Athens Air Traffic Control is """""ON STRIKE"""" FU@#ING M@L@K@S"""""

So here I am getting drunk and surfing the net with my trusty macbook.

A big few weeks for me. The last 2 years, as many of the FWA guys will know, I have been in and out of hospital with many serious injuries. That has meant NOT MUCH TIME ON THE WATER.
So the last few weeks have been my new start back into Formula. I am obviously out of condition and need time to get strong and fit. But I am committed to being HARDCORE this year.

I was pleased because, with a new board (2010 EXOCET) and new sails (2010 TR6 xt's), I still had great speed and pointing ability.

The reason my results were not better is simple,,,,,,,,,, SH!T starts, bad tactics, and rusty technique.

The really good guys were very helpful and talked with me a lot about Formula in Greece.
Wilhelm Schurman is very interested in maybe coming to Greece. He is a really nice guy. Cool and low tone. Sean O'brien wants to come this year. And maybe top Dutch sailor Markus Bouman will come as well.

CHRIS TING,,,, THE MASTER FIN MAKER FROM VMGBlades will marry in april. He hopes to come to Greece with his new wife for their honeymoon. If they do come,,, he will try and make time to come and tune, train and test with the Greek Formula fleet. (If his new wife does not get too angry) Maybe if the dates fit,,, he will race with us.

The 2010 Oceanics and Australian Formula Windsurfing Championships were a great success.
Main person responsible for organizing this year was AUS120 Sean O'Brien. He did a great job.
Skippers meetings, on course officials, and safety precautions were all world class. The ability of the starter and on course officials to re-set the course in quick time was amazing. And considering the extreme conditions all rescues were undertaken in a fast efficient manner. Well done to all concerned. Also the numerous parties and social gatherings that Sean had organized each day were great fun. Sean even brought a live band with him for the presentation party. Which was great. But the big surprise was when Sean grabbed a guitar and started playing with the band!!!!!!!!! Many talents has young Mr O’Brien. Thanks Sean.

The overall standard of the fleet was very high. With 20 different guys finishing in top 10 positions throughout the week. The Brazilian star Wilhelm Schurman, (or Willy,, as we liked to call him) was clear in the points, yet on the course he was often pushed and passed by quite a few of the Australian sailors. Somehow, his tactics and technique always brought him home in first position. But it was always close on the line.

Sean O'brien AUS 120 pushed the Brazilian everyday, and was rewarded in the last race with a win!!!!! 1st Aus120,,,, 2nd BRA999.

The wind was epic!!!! 15 to 25+ knots everyday!!!! 5 meter waves!!!! dolphins,, sharks,,, and even a whale!!!! turned up on the course.

Wave surfing in the morning. World class high wind Formula Racing in the afternoons. Then tasty, cold, relaxing beers with the guys in the evenings. PARADISE!!!!!!!

I hope that next year some of you would like to come with me. It's a fantastic fun good time, but still super high level. I have some photos from the week. Enjoy,,,,

See you all on the water in Greece soon.
Relax and go Fast!!!!!

GRE 200 - DOWN UNDER in AUSTRALIA

1 Feb. 2010

Wow,,,,,, The TR6'σ are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO powerful!!!!
I am here now at the race location for 2 days of racing.
We have had 2 days of local competition.
Almost everyone is using this small Saturday and Sunday event as a warm up
for the OCEANICS CHAMPIONSHIPS which start on Wednesday.

First day was light wind. 6 το 8 knots.
We had 4!!!!! abandoned starts back to back before we had enough wind to race.
Used my 12m on the new Exocet with a new VMG Blade. Had good angle, and plenty of fin pressure.
I just need a few more sessions to dial in the speed.

Second day was a VERY difficult, Shifting and very Gusty,
Was hard to know what to rig, Rigged the 11m and prayed that it would not build too much.
We had a 2 recalled starts. The second recalled start was my best start ever. I got away clean off the
line between BRA 999, Shurman, and ΑΗΣ 120 Ο'brien! Anyway we finally got away the 3rd try.
Race 1, was 12 το 16 knots. Shifting and Gusty.
My 11m was starting to feel good. I had trimmed my gear well and was starting find some
very good speed was easy for me to pass many other guys upwind on both tacks.

Race 2, was a nightmare!! (εφιάλτης!!!) wind picked up!
16 το 20+ knots.
I was stuck on my new Maui Sails 11m.
"ΓΑΜΙΣΕΤΑ"!!!!!!!!!! that sail nearly ripped off my arms!!!!!!!

My first time in the water with the 11m.
Got some good feedback from the top Maui Sails riders.
I needed to trim my sail a little more for better high wind handling.
5mm more downhaul, and an extra 4 to 6cm boom length.
Will know better next time.

Will have lots of photos and a full report on FWA.GR
But I will try and let you know what happens each day briefly here on this forum.
(when I can get on-line)
I also have asked if i can have an Interview with BRA999 and AUS120.
They both agreed. So if any of you have any questions you would like to ask,,,,,,,, just post them here.

Hey,,,,,,GRE202,,,,, You have regards and best wishes from Tibor and Ray from New Zealand.
And,,,,,,,GRE4,,,,, Wilhelm Shurman says hello.
GRE 2000,,,,, don't worry, over the next few days I will hang out with BRA999.
I will ask his opinion of the 2 starboards. And which one is for which rider.
GRE 969,,,,,,,,, I have some exciting fin news. But it'σ Top Secret. I will talk to you later.

Relax and go fast
